Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent in the Christian Calendar.  This year, Ash Wednesday falls on March 2.  The Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns will mark Ash Wednesday with a service beginning at 6:30pm, at the Clock Church, 42 N. Broadway.

Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. They are made from the burning of last Palm Sunday’s palm fronds, symbolize the dust from which God made us.  As the pastor applies the ashes to a person’s forehead, she speaks the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
