  • Music in Worship Series Returns to Old Dutch

  • Seven Sundays Is Back!

  • "Seven Sundays" Comes to an End, But Summer Services Continue at Old Dutch Church

gives the children present Aug. 14 at the Old Dutch Church worship service Children get a close look at the harp, with tips on how to play it. Harpist and singer Erin Hill sang and played the harp at the August 14 worship service. It was a wonderful finale to the Old Dutch Church annual summer series, "Seven Sundays: A Celebration of Music in Worship." Among the selections: Enya's "Only Time," "Over the Rainbow," the prayer song "Be Born in Me" and "Here Comes the Sun." She also invited the children to take a close look at the harp and gave them a few tips on how to play it (pictured).
The series featured different styles of music each week, aimed at helping all present to experience the liturgy and the Word in a new and innovative way. Previous performances this summer featured bluegrass, folk, musical theater, Uilleann pipe, classical and Russian/Ukranian balalaika.
Even though the series is over, summer worship at the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow will continue for three more Sundays. Services start, at 10 a.m. On September 11 we return to the Clock Church in Tarrytown, at which time nursery care, Sunday School, Choir and Fellowship following worship will resume. Services at the Clock Church start a half-hour later, at 10:30 a.m.

  • Youth Mission Team Needs Your Support

On July 4, Pastor Jeff Gargano will lead a mission team to Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic to work for a week restoring homes. "Your support is deeply appreciated--your prayer support, your personal encouragement, and your financial gifts," says Pastor Jeff. The team includes Jack Steurer, Hunter Burnett, Juliette Phillips, Nathan Gargano, Tesher Zafrin, Gavin Ryan and Stephanie O'Dea. Last summer a group of our teens was able to "pour" brand new floors in two homes in Jarabacoa, and then with the congregation's support, provide the funds for the re-building of a home over and around one of those floors. Donate to the church or go online to "Go Fund Me".

  • Sunday School Car Wash Is a Success!

Sunday School Car Wash Sunday May 17

The Sunday School kids "cleaned up" at the Car Wash fundraiser on Sunday, May 17. While the grownups worshiped, the children (with some help from Director Katie McCue-Schwartz and a parent or two, washed all the cars in the church parking lot. It's become an annual event for the Sunday School children, who are raising money for one of their selected missions for the year. The Car Wash generated $385 in donations. The money will benefit an animal rescue in Brooklyn, a community-based volunteer program that rescues dogs from high-kill shelters down south, then homes them with foster families until the dogs are adopted. Well done, children!

  • Teens Headed to DR in August

Cooking with Kevon, Nathan and JaneTwo of our teens and a helper pause for a photo in the church kitchen during preparations for the First-Sunday Brunch earlier this summer. It was a fundraiser for the upcoming Teen Mission trip to the Dominican Republic, taking place later this month. Five high school students have signed up so far to make the trip with Pastor Jeff to Jarabacoa, where they will do manual work, such as mixing concrete to upgrade dirt-floored homes. The team will worship together each morning, spend time at work, and more time getting to know the people of the village. Says Pastor Jeff, "Your support, prayer, encouragement and financial aid is deeply appreciated."

  • Volunteers Pitch In for House Clean-Out

Clean-out of Valley Street HousePictured are some of the team of 15 who spent several days this summer emptying two houses in Sleepy Hollow for sale. The houses on Valley Street and North Washington, along with their contents, were a bequest of the Julia, Paul and John Vydarney estate, with the expectation that any proceeds will be used for ministry, development or maintenance carried out at the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow.

The Vydarneys were lifelong members of the First Reformed Church, then of the Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns at the merger in 1991. "The Old Dutch Church held a special place in Julia, Paul and John's hearts," says the Rev. Jeffrey Gargano, pastor. "Their gifts make it possible for the Old Dutch Church to continue to be a vibrant and vital house of worship and a legendary historic site into the distant future."
